Building Information Modelling

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a collaborative process for designing, constructing and operating a building during its life cycle. It is defined as;

The digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility, forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.

Current BIM software is used by individuals, businesses and government agencies who plan, design, construct, operate and maintain diverse physical infrastructures, such as water, communication utilities, roads, bridges and ports, housing, apartments, schools and shops, offices, factories, warehouses and prisons.

Designed to drive efficiencies through the construction supply chain, BIM is mandatory on all government projects from April 2016 driving reductions in both carbon and capital costs; potentially any projects concerning Education, Healthcare, Offices, Leisure or Warehousing will require design data in electronic format. BIM is tipped to become the future of the industry with awareness growing rapidly.
